Third Time Lucky - EPK

We Are Patience

Merging math rock riffage with lyrical vulnerability, Patience writes compelling high energy anthems with dynamic driven grooves. After forming in 2023, Patience took their first steps into the alternative scene, performing at a range of venues across the UK. Whilst on record they tackle emotionally rich themes, live they maintain energetic performances encapsulating a sound that has been described as “Fully charged" that will "twist and turn around you, only to meld into something huge".

Third Time Lucky

In 2024, Patience released their first two singles, "Whatever It Takes" and "Trust," both of which

paved the road to the release of their debut EP, "Third Time Lucky" which includes four

additional tracks 'Swept Away', 'I'll Be Fine', 'Evergreen', and 'Bliss'. The band have been

developing these songs since the start of the band and fine tuning the tunes before beginning

recording which started in March of 2024. Taking a DIY approach to tracking guitars and bass

the band recorded these themselves on a laptop in Tom's bedroom as well as vocals which were

tracked in a local studio. From this point on Patience recorded drums with Leeds based

musician and producer Ieuan Jones (Artio) who then went on to mix and produce the EP.

Swept Away is the first track and acts as an intro / interlude into the EP. With no vocals, the

track aims to give the listener a taster into what's to come without giving too much away - odd

time signatures, soaring melodies and tastefully written drum parts. This track sets the tone

before leading straight into the first track 'Whatever It Takes'.

Masked in an upbeat pop instrumental ‘Whatever It Takes’ ebbs and flows between two states of mind. With the choruses presenting a more positive state of mind and outlook and the verses leaning into a more negative ‘dissociative’ state in which a person no longer recognises themselves and has become a servant to their own mind. Despite this ebb and flow the song remains overall hopeful with an overpowering sense and outlook of eventually overcoming those episodic negative feelings.

'I'll Be Fine' the third single from Patience's debut EP 'Third Time Lucky' is a synth infused math rock / mid-west emo song about having an ever-changing perspective on life, living with anxiety, stage fright and the use of music as an outlet. This song presents itself in a slightly heavier overall sound to the first two singles despite carrying an overall similar message and maintaining their usual melodic style.

'Bliss' is a 3 and a half minute shoe-gaze infused energetic math rock track which tackles themes of  mixed messages, knowing something is wrong for you but continuing anyway and attempting to break old habits. This is the prog track of the EP, with varying time signatures throughout and a breakdown towards the end of the track which exchanges bars of 5/4 and 6/4 (its a little bit nerdy) however remains easy on the ear with melodic soaring vocals that lead the way through the change in rhythm.

Evergreen is a song about betrayal, bitterness, being forgotten and having your feelings disregarded. With similar sonics to 'I'll Be Fine' and 'Bliss' 'Evergreen' acts as the more 'Djent-ified' song of the three with lots of misplaced accents lead by guitar and syncopated drums.

Trust, the final song of the debut Patience EP 'Third Time Lucky' is a 5 minute alternative pop guitar anthem about being blind sighted by relationships and losing trust in someone you hold dear to you - despite wanting to fix things and giving all you possibly can to that person. Regardless of the dark lyrical theme the song presents itself in an upbeat, cheerful manner with major sounding lead guitar lines and playful rhythms throughout.

This EP hopes to reflect on the history of both the band and its individual members, acknowledging the power of struggle as a means of carving an optimistic mutual future. It blends lyrical themes of anguish, plight, and persistence with bittersweet, nostalgic guitar lines that seek to craft a bright image held up by the past’s uncertain foundations. Patience hope that the EP has something for everyone and that despite the songs being written about certain events or feelings the listener find their own meaning when listening to 'Third Time Lucky'

Achievements

Whilst new on the UK alt scene, Patience are by no means novices, having received airtime multiple times on BBC introducing, reaching the final of the 2024 Fulford Arms Battle of the Bands, and headlining a number of shows in and around their hometown of Leeds. As well as this Patience took to the stage for the tenth anniversary of Strangeforms, one of Leeds' most iconic Math-rock/Post-rock festivals. Patience also opened up the factory floor stage at the first ever 'Shredder Festival' - a festival in Sheffield hosted and curated by BBC Introducing presenter 'Christian Carlisle' and frontman 'Loz Taylor' of the highly regarded metal core band- While She Sleeps.

For Patience this is only the beginning, as through their upcoming release and continued dedication to live performance, they hope to propel themselves into the rich and storied depths of the British alternative scene.
